Mailart in the Schools

Today, my wife Nancy Huth began her second annual mailart unit in her creative writing class. As examples, I gave her the ten pieces listed right below this note. Nancy is a stickler for accuracy, so the assignment requires her students to mail their project to her at home. I'm looking forward to seeing what the kids come up with (one of the possible themes is "Thursday," which sounds just right to me). Once the projects are in, I'll post a few of them for the approval of "professional" mailartists.

Thursday sounds like a perfect theme for schoolkids as far as I am concerned. Thursday (jeudi) when I was little and living in France, was the day of the week that all schoolkids were off. It evokes walks in the park and playing with friends and much more so than week-ends, it was the "un-schoolday." Songs were written about that special day of freedom for little children. But I think shortly after I left school, the day was switched to Wednesday, and at this point I don't even know that schoolchildren have a day off now every week anymore. For my generation, jeudi was a special day indeed.

Martine,

What a surprise! When I went to school in Portugal, we had to go in for a half-day on Saturday! But you kids in France were relaxing on Thursday!?

Yes, and hence the expression: "la semaine des 4 jeudis", a fantasy week with 4 Thursdays (the fifth one being the real Thursday), during which you never had to go to school!
